Ditty Dokter
Tapestry Weaver

I weave landscape based tapestries, which are often related to my Dutch and East Anglian homes; a detail, an element, sometimes a more figurative impression. I use a range of yarns including linen, cotton, wool, silk, fleece and found objects. Guided by colour and shape, the natural materials aim to evoke the qualities of home and (not) being at home, separations and connections. I prefer a more improvisational weaving style, which developed after training with Eta Ingram, at Westdean college with Philip Sanderson and specialist courses with master weavers such as Louise Martin.
I have worked with textiles for most of my life but been engaged in tapestry for 15 years now. I worked professionally as a psychotherapist (drama, dance, group analytic) in adult/adolescent mental health. Improvised performance was part of that practice. I developed the weaving alongside Amerta; an ecological movement improvisation practice. As well as in textile related exhibitions, I have exhibited my weavings as part of multi media performances (Finding home, Come or Go, Fluid borders and Mycelial connections over time)
I occasionally offer workshops about the interweaving of embodiment and tapestry. My therapy life included both clinical and teaching responsibilities and I now prefer to focus on making.Since 2017 I have exhibited with the Riverside Artists as part of Cambridge open studios and alongside performance work. More recently I also regularly take part in textile arts and tapestry exhibitions.
